MPBF INTAKE AND OWNER SURRENDER POLICY
Merit Pit Bull Foundation focuses priority on shelter dogs that are rescue only. We do take owner surrenders, but rarely ever on an emergency basis as dogs have to be evaluated and placed on the waiting list for an appropriate foster home to become available. There is an option to “community foster” your pet or a stray to help in the process. Because of our growth MPBF receives over 20 requests daily from shelters and families in hard situations who are looking for help. We are only able to help so many dogs at a time. MPBF has established our intake policy in order to evaluate as many dogs as we can in order to determine if they fit into our program's standards and guidelines.
Keeping dogs in their home is our main goal!
Because of our process, we are not an organization that can move quickly to intake a dog. We are rarely in a position to help in last minute or “urgent” situation. Our foster homes are continually at capacity and we have an active waiting list.
We do not board dogs while we wait for a foster space to open up.
In order for a dog to be accepted into our program, the dog must be SAFER tested by a member of our intake team or an approved volunteer. The dog must have a favorable SAFER score in order to be considered for our adoption program.
For owner surrenders we host quarterly testing times in the Greensboro and Raleigh area. We also have very few foster homes that can house and train dogs with behavioral issues.
Once a dog is approved, they may have to wait until we have available foster space.
If you are interested in surrendering a dog to our program please email INFO@MPBF.org with “Owner Surrender” as the subject and we will respond with the needed paperwork to get the process started.
Be advised that completing the paperwork does not guarantee your dog a place in our program.
Please remember that all parts of Merit Pit Bull Foundation, including intake are run by volunteers. Please be patient as we respond to your requests.
